Term Focuses

Every term, we ensure that our Speaking Skills Owlets program provides the essential theory students need to succeed alongside plenty of practice.

However, the specific focus of the program changes every term, with each term emphasising the following:

  • Term #1: Method Essentials
  • Term #2: Speaking Manner Essentials
  • Term #3: Textual Analysis Essentials
  • Term #4: Impromptu Essentials

The starting point for any speech is knowing what you want to say. But it’s not always easy, because there are so many different ways of looking at the world and understanding people that can make writing a persuasive or informative piece difficult sometimes, even when we know our topic inside out!

Across Term #1, we’ll be placing our focus on speech method – the structures we can use to develop our ideas into persuasive and effective speeches.

Each session of the Owlets program is designed to combine a speaking activity, a new piece of theory and a practical task to solidify that week’s concept. Public speaking can only be improved by taking on opportunities to present – with this in mind, the focus for the Owlets program is to develop students’ speaking skills by spending nearly the entire session preparing and presenting speeches, placing a particular emphasis on method and speech structure in Term #1.

If students would like a little more challenge, the two-hour weekly Public Speaking Penguins and Debating Parrots programs will also go through more advanced theoretical content at a faster pace!

Who Should Do This Program?

Our Speaking Skills Owlets course is a mixed-level program for students in Years 5 & 6, and is aimed at:

  • Students who have no public speaking experience (there is no assumed knowledge in any focus, so students are welcome to join any time throughout the year);
  • Students who have already completed up to 3 terms of Speaking Skills Owlets (the focus changes every term, so there’s no repetition of content across the entire year);
  • Students who have been completing our Public Speaking Penguins program, which follows the same focuses across each term; and
  • Students who have given our Year 3 & 4 term programs (such as Speaking Skills Joeys or Debating Wallabies) or holiday workshops (such as Public Speaking Honeyeaters or Debating Hummingbirds) a try, and want to continue developing their speaking skills!

We usually recommend that students do all four terms of either our Speaking Skills Owlets and/or Public Speaking Penguins programs (which mirror one another) to ensure that they cover all the basics of public speaking!

Please get in touch if you’d like to discuss what’s best for your child, or check out our video below to see how our term program progressions work!

What Are The Main objectives of this program?

Revision of Fundamental Concepts

The program starts with a succinct (but important) revision of essential concepts, including audience engagement and speech structure. This helps set students up for the rest of the program and ensures that everyone starts on a similar level.

Speech Structure Essentials

Following an introduction to the fundamentals, several sessions are dedicated to learning how to create engaging and well-structured speeches. Structuring elements such as introductions, conclusions, and especially body paragraphs are a key focus and all concepts are followed by interactive activities, where students learn to create organized and persuasive speeches and apply these skills in their own presentations.

Practice Speeches and Interactive Activities

The remainder of the program is filled with a variety of practice speeches and specially curated activities that aim to enhance presentation skills. It covers a broad spectrum of skills, including body language and verbal manner, among others. These skills are reinforced through regular practice speeches and constructive feedback, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to grow and improve!

Coach Updates

The term ends with a coach update – an opportunity for parents to meet with coaches and learn about their childs progress as well as having any and all of their questions answered

How Big Is The Class?

Our classes vary in size for every program depending on how many bookings we receive – however, the maximum size of our Speaking Skills Owlets class is around nine students with one coach.

If there aren’t any spots left, it’s usually because we’ve hit capacity – please get in touch with us and we’ll see what we can do about either opening an extra class, fitting your child into the existing class, or putting you on a waitlist in case any students pull out!
